Don Bosco Church

Hwange [Zimbabwe]
Project phase:  2015-2016

The project in collaboration with Architetti Senza Frontiere Veneto Onlus, is part of a masterplan that sees the design of a new Technical College in the land owned by the Salesian community in Hwange, Zimbabwe, and a chapel for the community and users of the College. The goal is versatility for a space that in effect aims to become a symbolic place, used as a place of prayer and for public functions. The truncated cone shape reminds us to look upwards, towards an intimate and deep relationship with our spirituality. The materials used are those present in situ, handmade bricks produced by local workers for the definition of the boundary walls and seats, tribal designs decorate the walls, while the supporting structure is made of wood with a straw elephant grass cover. The project aims to follow the principle of sustainability, focusing on the local workforce and taking into account the architectural typology of the history and tradition of the country.
